OHMI Teaching Research

Findings from independent evaluation of OHMI's work in education settings

OHMI Music-Makers Whole Class Research

OHMI Reveal Evaluation
In 2026, Birmingham City University was commissioned by OHMI to evaluate the effectiveness of OHMI Reveal – a digital platform created by OHMI to help schools and Music Hubs systematically identify children who may benefit from adaptations or alternative approaches within Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET).
The research, undertaken by Professor Victoria Kinsella, Dr Nikki Booth, Dr Anthony Anderson and Dr Adam Whittaker, identified five key findings:
  1. OHMI Reveal increases visibility of physical access needs across WCET.
  2. Identification does not consistently lead to timely action.
  3. Professional judgement remains central to inclusive practice.
  4. Growth in provision introduces capacity challenges.
  5. OHMI Reveal is sufficiently developed to inform wider adoption.

Full reports from 2022 - 2026 set out further details of these findings offers recommendations for both policy and practice.

OHMI Music-Makers Individual Research

In 2017, Birmingham City University was commissioned by OHMI to report on the Teaching Pilot and explore the process and factors relating to teaching of the instruments.

The research, led by Professor Martin Fautley and Dr Victoria Kinsella, examined three elements:
  1. The scale and depth of the current inequalities in music education provision faced by physically disabled people and the barriers faced to “undifferentiated participation in musical-making” (a specific objective of the OHMI Trust).
  2. The teachers, the training and support required to teach learners with a physical disability effectively to use a musical instrument.
  3. The experiences of learners where the pedagogic interaction with the teacher is the focus. Although this is well explored in literature relating to the able bodied, there is much new ground to explore in working with those with a physical disability.
The final reports set out the findings from this research and offer recommendations for both policy and practice.

Donate to OHMI

There are so many disabled people who are desperate to play music with their peers. We can help to make that happen – but we can only do that with the wonderful support of our funders and donors.

As our instruments have to be hand-made by experts, they can only be produced in small numbers and are therefore expensive.
You can read more about why OHMI’s support is needed and the impact your donation could make to a disabled musician here »
Every little really does help.
