We’re delighted that Tom Shakespeare, social scientist, bioethicist and leading voice on disability issues, supported The OHMI Trust in its BBC Radio 4 charity Appeal.
Tom is a high-profile advocate for disabled people and a familiar voice on Radio 4. We were delighted when he accepted our invitation to front the appeal. In his delivery, Tom recounts the story of Maria who was born without a left hand, Rowan who uses her right hand to read Braille music whilst she plays, and Kaila, whose Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy is no barrier to playing the Bagpipes.

“It’s really important that that disabled people can play musical instruments. I spend all my time listening to BBC Radio and I want to hear disabled classical musicians, jazz musicians, folk musicians, the whole lot! So that’s why I support OHMI and why I want them to be available to everybody.”

Every pound donated makes a welcome contribution to OHMI’s Instrument Hire Scheme which allows musicians to try out different instruments at very affordable rates. Each donation helps to uncover hidden talent, and empower adults and children with a disability to take part in music-making.

It’s only through the support of our wonderful donors, funders and champions that we can continue to open up the world of music to hundreds of individuals living with disability across the UK and beyond.

Donate to OHMIThere are so many disabled people who are desperate to play music with their peers. We can help to make that happen – but we can only do that with the wonderful support of our funders and donors.
As our instruments have to be hand-made by experts, they can only be produced in small numbers and are therefore expensive. Every little really does help.
