ResearchA key element of OHMI’s work is research into music education, instrument design, instrument manufacture and social issues.

OHMI Connect is a FREE online resource to allow individuals with upper limb impairments to identify instruments and equipment that might meet their physical needs and musical interests or to allow people who are interested in a particular instrument to find out about all adaptations related to that instrument.
The OHMI Research Partnership
The OHMI Research Partnership (the "ORP") was launched in 2019. It is a collaboration between the OHMI Trust, Queen Mary University of London, and Birmingham City University. Its purpose is to form new research partnerships, on subjects relating to music and disability, with universities, researchers, musicians, educators, sociologists and instrument makers globally. Areas of potential research include instrument design and adaptation, music education, policy issues and social impacts.

OHMI Conference 2018
The OHMI Conference in 2018 brought together current multi-disciplinary research with, among others, the experiences of disabled musicians, teachers, charities, funders, and government agencies.
Presentations at the 2018 Conference made strong references to the “social model” of disability and many disputed assumptions that disabilities of any kind necessary limit musicianship. |
OHMI Teaching Pilot
In 2016, Birmingham City University was commissioned by OHMI to report on the Teaching Pilot and explore the process and factors relating to teaching of the instruments.
The Teaching Pilot went on to become OHMI’s Music-Makers programme. |
Donate to OHMIThere are so many disabled people who are desperate to play music with their peers. We can help to make that happen – but we can only do that with the wonderful support of our funders and donors.
As our instruments have to be hand-made by experts, they can only be produced in small numbers and are therefore expensive. Every little really does help.
