Tough day. I left early to miss the rain (due early afternoon) and made it to Basingstoke around 2:30pm after six and half hours on the road. But it was the traffic that made the trip so miserable. Unfortunately, I couldn't completely avoid the A34- Ribbon-of-Death. This is like a motorway without a hard shoulder, so trucks thundered past inches away, blasting and buffeting as they went. The carrion crows sitting hunched in the road-stained trees along the way, watching, summed up the mood. With a judicious mix of cowardice, use of slip roads, and plain good luck, I arrived tired, sore and hungry.
On a happier note, my thanks to Stuart Griffiths, Daryl Back, and family for their hospitality last night and to Ken Guild for driving all the way down from Colchester with the GPS transmitter for the bike. You can now follow me on Google maps by clicking the link on the home page. Actually it's slightly unnerving being tagged like this - and I can't now catch the train.
